BIKES or boots will be required for this year's Ride and Stride for Derbyshire churches.

Prospective fund-raisers are encouraged to cycle or walk between as many churches and chapels as possible on September 13, raising much-needed cash in the process.

This year's Ride and Stride has been organised to coincide with the Heritage Open Days weekend, as it is hoped that people will get out and about to discover Derbyshire.

The fund-raising scheme is in aid of Derbyshire Churches and Chapels Preservation Trus.t

A Preservation Trust spokesperson said: "The churches and chapels of Derbyshire are visual and historical landmarks of their own towns or villages, as well as being places of worship for their communities and for the celebration of significant moments in people's lives.

"Many of them are more than 500 years old and provide the most obvious and generally accessible examples of our architectural heritage."

Churches in Swarkestone, Newhall, Repton, Ticknall and Willington are listed among many others as participating venues for the event.

Sponsorship money will be divided equally between the Derbyshire Churches & Chapels Preservation Trust, and the nominated church or chapel chosen by the rider or walker.

Further information, sponsorship forms and a full list of participating venues can all be found at www.derbyshirehistoricbuildings.org.uk
