PUPILS in the Barton under Needwood area have been using their artistic skills to keep safe on the roads.

Winners and runners up in a road safety poster competition will be presented with their prizes by East Staffordshire Local Policing Commander, Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey, at an event at Argos’s distribution centre tomorrow.

The competition was part of a road safety campaign which ran throughout December.

A lorry, provided by Argos, was taken into primary schools in the area to help illustrate the need for extra care when cycling on roads used by heavy goods vehicles.

The initiative was set up and run by PCSO Steve Smith in partnership Argos and with input from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

More than 70 entries were received for the poster competition and the presentation was delivered to pupils at six primary schools in the area.

PCSO Steve Smith said: “I’m really pleased with the way the campaign has been received.

“The children really seemed to take on board the message we were trying to convey.”

Chief Insp Steve Maskrey said: “I’m delighted to be presenting the prizes to the winning entrants in the poster competition.

“The standard was very high.”
