A NEW website which compares local councils’ road safety performance has revealed areas in Burton and South Derbyshire that are ‘accident blackspots’.

The new Road Safety Comparison Site can be used to pinpoint places across both areas which have had the most ‘fatal or serious’ accidents between 2005 to 2011.

In Burton, the results unsurprisingly reveal the most accident-hit area around the town is the A38, closely followed by the A511 and Derby Road.

Buses and taxis were found to be involved in a high majority of accidents in the area.

In South Derbyshire, Swadlincote topped the charts, with Castle Gresley, Overseal and Linton also identified as particularly bad. The A444 and the A514 were named as the most dangerous roads for drivers traversing the area.

One surprising factor was that a high proportion of the incidents over the six years involved motorcycles.

As well as putting casualty figures in to context, the site provides a mapping facility so that people can see how many cyclists or children have been involved in collisions on a particular road.

This is part of wider government moves to improve transparency and accountability by providing people with easy-to-access information on how services are being delivered.

The data also revealed that the number of ‘severe’ collisions in Burton and South Derbyshire had dropped dramatically between 2005 and 2011.

In South Derbyshire, the number dropped from close to 2,400 in 2005 to less than 1,800 in 2011.

Stephen Hammond, road safety minister, said: “The new comparison website will give residents a more accurate picture of their area’s performance in reducing road casualties and will allow councils to make more meaningful assessments of the work they are doing to improve road safety. If an area is performing particularly well then I want to see them sharing best practice with others so that they can improve “

A high proportion of accidents involved busses, eh? They must all be Midland Classic or Trent Barton, because Arriva are perfect.......
