THE chief executive of Trent & Dove Housing handed over a cheque for £1,500 to Ian Leech, from St Giles Hospice, following a gruelling cycling expedition from Lands End to John O'Groats.

Ron Dougan drew on huge reserves of willpower as he spent 11 days cycling the 900-mile route, battling challenging terrain and weather which could throw even the most experienced cyclist off track.

He said: "This is easily the hardest challenge I have ever faced. St Giles Hospice do fantastic work to help people suffering from terminal illness. My stepdad Joe died of cancer a few years ago. He lived in Wales where there were no places available in the local hospice. I know that his last days would have been far better for him and my mum if there had been."
