BARTON under Needwood Rugby Club will start their new season with a number of changes.
Matt Bird is the new club captain after being voted in at the AGM at at Holland Park sports club.
He will take over from Jonny Simons, who has stepped aside due to other commitments. Bird has been the first team captain for a number of seasons.
Bird handed his first team captain’s armband over to club stalwart Dave Rowe, who is taking control of the team for the second time.
Rowe will be taking charge of the team who are due to start their new season in the reformed Midlands 4 West league, where they will playing their old rivals Rugeley and Cannock as well as travelling further afield to teams such as Bishops Castle and Telford.
Powerful winger Jon Shum will be supporting Rowe as vice-captain.
Shum said: “After our success in winning the Staffordshire Sevens series, we have been working hard on our fitness and we have seen the return of some great players to our squad.”
This season, Barton are more confident than ever of turning out a second team, which will be led by Andy Gilett.
He is keen to ensure that the second team provide support to the first team by bringing through their junior players.They will start their season against neighbours Burton Vets on Saturday September 13.
Matt Knight will again be sevens captain. Knight led his team through this summer to become county champions – the first county honours for the club in their 20-year history.
