EIGHT workers from a Burton supermarket have managed to raise more than £2,000 to help the fight against cancer.

Staff from Sainsbury's, in Union Street, have spent the last few months furiously raising money as they prepared to take part in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life at Darley Park, Derby.

Guy Swindells, store manager, said: "We are grateful to everyone who has supported us and I want to thank everyone who has taken part and to everyone who has generously donated."

In total, the women raised £2,005 through donations from colleagues, family, friends and the general public.

They recently held a bake-off event in which staff members made cakes which were then judged by the Mail, and sold their treats to raise £213. They also held a bag-packing event which raised £373.

The eight women managed to complete the Race for Life in one hour and 10 minutes.

The group are hoping to take part in other sponsored events in the area soon.
