MORE than 500 supporters turned up at Borrowash Victoria’s Watkinson Construction Stadium on Tuesday night to witness Derby County Ladies take on giants Arsenal Ladies in a friendly fixture.

The fixture marked the latest success chapter in the Rams’ ambitious plans to join the Women’s Super League, and Arsenal paid the Ewes the greatest respect by fielding a full-strength side containing England Internationals Kelly Smith, Casey Stoney, Rachel Yankey, Siobahn Chamberlain, Alex Scott and Jordan Nobbs – all in front of watching England manager Mark Samsom.

John Bennett’s youthful Derby side understandably spent the majority of the game on the back foot, looking to contain Arsenal’s team of household names, whose superior fitness and experience saw the Gunners eventually triumph 5-0.

After the game, Arsenal officials and players were united in their praise of Derby and the level of home support, admitting that it topped some of their own Super League fixtures.
