HUNDREDS of Brownies from Derbyshire have taken part in a special gathering to celebrate their centenary.

The youngsters, including dozens from Swadlincote, Melbourne and Hilton, paraded through Derby, accompanied by the rousing sounds of a marching band and went to the Assembly Rooms to take part in cosmic-themed activities to fit in with the Big Brownie Birthday theme ‘Star Quest’.

Michelle Lewis, the Brownies’ area co-ordinator for Derbyshire South East, said the Assembly Rooms had been split in to three zones with activities from The Brownies’ past, present and future.

She said: “In the past zone, we’ve got activities that the Brownies did years ago like semaphore flags and table-top skittles.

“In the present zone there’s three areas where the Brownies will do ‘pre-flight checks’ before they go to ‘space’.

In the future zone, two large inflatable planetariums have been installed.

Bob Wheeler, leader of South Derbyshire District Council, and chairman Anne Hood were in attendance at the event.
