GOVERNMENT energy policy is tantamount to the ‘economics of the madhouse’, a Socialist Labour Party chief has claimed.

East Midlands organiser Paul Liversuch, who stood for the party in South Derbyshire at the 2010 General Election, spoke after energy regulator Ofgem warned fuel bills would rise as the UK entered bidding wars for gas while decommissioning polluting old power stations.

He said: “I was criticised for condemning Margaret Thatcher and her policies, but the latest news has proved I was right.

“We are going to have to rely on imports of gas and nuclear power, which the Government has gone back on.

“They are prepared to subsidise nuclear for 40 years and are not prepared to subsidise the coal industry when we have 1,000 years of reserves.

“It’s the economics of the madhouse and we are all paying for it.”
