THIS stunning picture of a supermoon was captured by Mail photographer Simon Deacon.

The photo was caught as the supermoon, which is when the moon is at its closest and brightest, was seen towering over Winshill.

People were able to see the Perseid meteor shower, where 'shooting stars' fly across the sky.

The supermoon, which was the biggest of the year, brought the moon's orbit closest to the Earth for 20 years.

The supermoon was a hit on Twitter with the #supermoon2014.
