POLICE have slammed a gang of youths who filmed themselves sitting inside a tyre while it was being towed by a moving car through icy country roads.

Police said the practice, known as ‘snow-tubing’, is ‘dangerous’ and threatened to confiscate the 22-year-old driver’s vehicle.

One of the young people was positioned inside the middle of the tyre while it was connected by a tow-rope to a moving Audi A3.

Derbyshire police has slammed the act as ‘dangerous’ and urged others not to repeat the same offence which could have been fatal to those involved and to others around them.

It was reported that the whole incident was also being filmed by those in the car.

Police received three calls regarding the event on Monday. Two calls were received around 11.47am saying the car and the tyre was in Hartshill Road, Hartshorne, and a further call was made to the police saying the gang had moved to Goseley Avenue, Midway.

Police were also told that someone was leaning out of the window of the Audi hatchback filming the whole event.

The youths were tracked down in Newhall.

Derbyshire police caught up with the culprits in Meadow View Road, Newhall, and the driver of the Audi, a 22-year-old man from Woodville was issued with a Section 59 warning – which allows police to seize his car if he is caught committing the same offence again.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “We received reports of an Audi A3 towing a tyre.

“There were three calls received by police. Two calls were made around 11.47am saying they were in Hartshill Road, Hartshorne, and one call to say they were in Goseley Avenue.

“It was reported that someone was also leaning out of the window filming the people sitting on the tyre.

“We tracked them down and gave the driver serious words of warning and issued him with a section 59 warning. It means if he is caught doing this again his car will be seized.

“This should be a warning to others that it is not a sensible thing to do, in fact it is a very dangerous this to do.”

‘Tubing’ on snow is a wintertime activity that is similar to sledding. ‘Tubers’ can reach considerable speeds while riding, especially on steep slopes. Because of the circular shape of snow tubes (or tyres), controlling the course and speed of a tube while riding on snow is extremely difficult. This lack of control has led to injuries, some serious, when riders have struck obstacles such as trees while tubing on snow.
