A TOXIC cocktail of European emissions and Saharan sand will cause dangerously high levels of pollution across Burton and South Derbyshire today and tomorrow.
The Government department Defra has urged people with lung or heart conditions to avoid exercising outside.
Record levels of pollution were recorded across the UK yesterday, while pollution in the region is predicted to hit eight on Defra’s 10-point scale today (pictured), falling to seven tomorrow.
A spokesman from the department said: “The high level of air pollution this week is due to a combination of local emissions, light winds, pollution from the continent and dust blown over from the Sahara.
“We want to keep improving air quality and have introduced a new five day forecast service in addition to investing heavily in local and transport initiatives to tackle this issue head on.”
