SOME shoppers at Sainsbury’s in Burton will now have to pay to park on Sundays.

The Union Street store has removed its day’s grace to bring Sunday in line with the rest of the week, meaning shoppers will have to pay £1 to park for two hours - though those who spend more than £10 in store will still go free.

Sainsbury’s said it had introduced the policy to ‘make it easier for people to find a parking space’.

Shopper Elaine Pritchard said she was surprised at the lack notice customers were provided with prior to the change.

She said: “I discovered it by chance when I checked one of the pay and display machines. For many years shoppers have been able to park free on a Sunday for as long as they wanted.

“I was surprised there were no big signs saying charges now apply seven days a week.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We’ve changed the policy to make it easier for customers to park when shopping on Sundays.”
