WIDESPREAD school closures are reported across Burton and South Derbyshire as the snow continues to fall across the area..

A major healthy lifestyle event in Swadlincote tomorrow has also fallen victim to the weather.

Further snowfall is predicted throughout Friday, with temperatures remaining at -2C throughout the day, and more snow forecast for Saturday.

3.10pm - Disabled Christians Fellowship meeting cancelled

Tomorrow's meeting of the Disabled Christians Fellowship Trent Valley Group has been postponed because of the weather.

1.45pm - Abbot Beyne closes

Abbot Beyne School, in Winshill, has closed due to the snow.

1.33pm - Healthier South Derbyshire Day postponed

The Healthier South Derbyshire Day due to be held at the Green Bank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote tomorrow has been postponed due to snow.

The event, which was due to feature information stalls as well as sports and activity taster sessions, will be rearranged for a future date.

Vicky Smyth, healthier partnership manager at South Derbyshire District Council, said: “Several exhibitors have had to withdraw because of problems travelling and with the snowy conditions set to continue we felt it was the best option for all involved.

1.30pm - William Allitt closes

William Allitt School, in Newhall, closed due to the snow.

1.17pm - Two more South Derbyshire schools close

Church Gresley Infant and Nursery School and Elmsleigh Infant and Nursery School are closed.

1.12pm - More South Derbyshire school closures

Springfield Junior School and Walton on Trent Primary and Nursery School are closed due to snow.

12.45pm - More school closures in Burton.

Closing at 12.45pm: Paget High School.

Closing at 1pm: Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Sports College, Lansdowne Infants School, Needwood CE Primary School, River View Primary and Nursery School, Rykneld Primary School, Victoria Community School

Closing at 1.30pm: Fountains High School and Fountains Primary School

Closing at 2pm: Tower View Primary School

Also closed are Thomas Russell Infants and Yoxall St Peters CE Primary.

Outwoods Primary School will remain open but parents can collect their children from 1pm if they wish.

12.37pm - de Ferrers and John Taylor to close

John Taylor High School, in Barton under Needwood, and de Ferrers Academy, in Horninglow, are closing for the day at 1pm.

12.34pm - Newhall school closure

Fairmeadows Foundation Primary School, in Newhall, closed at noon due to the snow.

11.26am - Bus routes update

Arriva Midlands has confirmed that all bus routes leaving Burton (service numbers 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 9A, 29, 29A and X38) are for the meantime still running, although some drivers have reported difficulties due to poor road conditions.

11.10am - Additional school closures

Staffordshire County Council has confirmed that Yoxall St Peter's Primary School, Lansdowne Infants School's nursery and pre-nursery, Needwood Primary School and Outwoods Primary School's nursery will all be closing early this afternoon.

10.46am - Disability group meeting called off

A club run by a South Derbyshire group for people with learning disabilities has been postponed.

The ShoutOut Friday Night Club was due to be held tonight at Woodville Youth Centre, but has been called off due to the weather.

All being well, the group plans to meet next Friday at the same time and venue.

10.45am - Council-run outdoor pitches closed

All outdoor facilities at Shobnall Leisure Complex and all East Staffordshire Borough Council-run pitches in Burton are closed due to the weather.

This includes pitches at Newton Road, in Winshill, Edge Hill and Heath Road, in Stapenhill, St Luke’s and Eton Road, in Horninglow, and Anglesey Road, in Burton.

10.34am - Health and wellbeing event postponed

A health and wellbeing event due to be held today at Eton Park Junior School, in Horninglow, has been postponed.

The event, which was aimed at boosting mental health in the area, was due to start at 2pm. The school is currently open but the closure decision was taken after more snow was forecast around lunchtime.

10.30am - Netherseal school closure

Due to forecasts of snow, Netherseal St Peter's Primary School will close at 1pm ‘to ensure the safety of pupils and staff’

10.25am - Snow warning to motorists

Police are giving away free ice scrapers, in a bid to remind motorists not to leave their engines running when they defrost their cars.

Leicestershire Police say during times of frost and snow they receive more reports of cars stolen while their owners leave them unattended on the driveway with the engine running to ‘defrost’.

Officers out on patrol in North West Leicestershire will be giving the ice scrapers to motorists clearing their cars.

    Why on Friday night and this morning coming to work were the roads not gritted? Friday night around the Derby turn island, it was like a skating rink. Who ever is in charge of this should be sacked on the spot. The council are northing but a joke, they put peoples lifes at risk.
