SCORES of South Derbyshire recycling centres will be scrapped after the success of a green refuse scheme.

South Derbyshire District Council’s environment and development services committee has decided to keep just 10 of its 83 centres at a meeting on Thursday in order to save £50,000, which would then meet the costs of its green bin scheme.

In the first three months of the Easy Green Recycling Scheme, 1,872 tonnes of waste were collected in the new 240-litre green bins and caddies – double the amount collected the year before.

The 10 sites which are staying are Melbourne’s High Street, Swadlincote’s Rink Drive, Hatton’s Station Road, Hilton’s Main Street, Shardlow, Willington’s Twyford Road, Ticknall’s Ingleby Lane, Overseal’s Woodville Road, Castle Gresley’s Bass’s Crescent, and Hillcrest in Midway.
