A BURTON shopkeeper avoided a jail sentence as trading standards bosses continued their war on illegal cigarettes in the region.

Mohamed Amen was the latest offender to be brought to justice after admitting to selling counterfeit and non-duty paid cigarettes at the Ezee Shop, in Horninglow Road North.

A total of 2,160 cigarettes and 1.6 kilogrammes of tobacco were found at the shop following a raid last September.

Amen, 27, was handed a 12-month community order, which includes 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was also told to pay £787.50 in costs to trading standards.

It comes after two similar convictions during the last week.

Osman Ahmad, 36, was jailed for two months for selling banned cigarettes from his corner shop in Dallow Street, Burton, while Ridah Jaf, 41, is awaiting sentence after admitting selling the illegal products at the Mr Cheap store, on The Delph, Swadlincote.
