TWO shoplifters have had their next court appearance date amended so one can attend her child's birthday party.

Hayley Jackson, 35, of Anchor Close, Swadlincote, and Ashley Smith, 30, of Brockley, Spondon, appeared at Burton Magistrates' Court yesterday to admit stealing goods from TK Maxx, in Tamworth, on July 12.

They are accused of stealing items worth £1,180.62 but dispute the cost of the goods, claiming it only amounted to £100.

John Walsh, defending the duo, said: "They admit stealing property but dispute the level that was actually taken.

"They were seen leaving the store with property without paying and getting in their car.

"They were later detained in their car, where they say they had other items which were legitimately theirs but lumped together. They believe they stole about £100 worth, so there is a massive discrepancy."

The case was due to be adjourned to August 13 for more information to be collected, but Smith had organised a birthday party for her child on this date and so the pair are now due to appear on August 12.

They answer conditional bail not to enter TK Maxx in Tamworth.
