Shopping from the comfort of your car

THE weekly shop is being made a whole lot easier following the opening of the region’s first drive-through supermarket.

The shopping experience can be one of dread for many people, but negotiating busy aisles with the trolley may be a thing of the past for customers at the Tesco store in Ashby, who can now pick up their shopping without even leaving the car.

The firm is gradually introducing the scheme at its supermarkets across the country as an alternative to its home delivery service.

Online shopping has become the norm for many people in the digital era, but supermarket bosses feel some are often put off from this method of shopping as they feel restricted to their homes while waiting for their goods to be delivered.

Now, with the launch of the drive-through service, Tesco feels it has all the bases covered.

Ian Crook, marketing director at Tesco, said: “We believe this will be especially popular with busy mums who have the school run and children’s activities to manage.

“It offers a convenient solution to parents who want to avoid the challenge of shopping in a busy store with children in tow but can’t afford the time to stay in for the shopping to arrive at their door.

“We also expect it to help young professionals who want all the convenience of a pre-picked and packed shop but who cannot commit to waiting at home for delivery. They can collect their food shopping on the way home from work or at any other time that suits them.”

Shoppers using the service at the Resolution Road store pre-order their goods online, but rather than having to wait at home for delivery, or enter the store themselves, they can drive to a designated collection point at a prearranged time that suits them.

Shoppers won’t have to leave their car at all during the process, with staff at the ready to bring out their goods and load them into the car.

Ashby’s store manager John Sheward, said: “We are very excited to be able to offer this new service to our customers .I speak to them every day about their shopping experience and this new drive-through will now offer even more choice in how they buy their shopping.

“Customers who are stretched for time can now buy the same great products at the same great prices without having to leave their car.”

To join the service, customers can log on to Tesco.com, clicking ‘click and collect’, before choosing a two-hour time slot in which they can then pick up their shopping at any point in that period.
