A DRIVER has died and another was left seriously injured during a weekend of horror on South Derbyshire’s roads.
A man was killed when the yellow Honda Civic he was driving hit a lamppost near Granville Sports College, in Burton Road, Woodville, just before midnight on Saturday.
The smash came little more than 24 hours after two cars were involved in a nasty collision in Coton Park, near Linton, at 7.40pm on Friday.
Derbyshire Police has launched an appeal for information and has urged any witnesses to come forward.
A spokesman for the force said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to contact our investigation team.”
The stretch of Burton Road where the fatal crash happened was cordoned off to traffic yesterday morning while officers carried out investigations.
The police spokesman said: “At approximately 11.55pm on Saturday, March 22, in Burton Road, Woodville, near the Granville School, a road traffic collision occurred involving a yellow Honda Civic.
“As a result, the driver suffered fatal injuries.”
A spokesman from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters from Swadlincote had cut the driver free by 00.45am from his car, which is believed to have overturned.
Earlier, on Friday evening, emergency services were needed to free two drivers when a blue Lexus was heading away from Linton crashed with a grey Alfa Romeo.
Firefighters from Swadlincote used specialist equipment to free the drivers, who were both injured the collision.
The police spokesperson said: “One of the drivers had to be taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham, with suspected serious injuries.”
Anyone with information on the crashes has been urged to call Derbyshire Police’s investigation team on 101.
