Clamp bags top weight despite low water levels

THE low water levels are not just affecting the trout fisheries.

The cold and wet conditions at Thornton have seen few anglers fishing at the reservoirSeveral of our coarse fisheries are at very low levels but that does not seem to be affecting the way in which they are fishing.

The Burton Veterans had a cracking day at the Thorpe Constantine fishery, where Paul Clamp won by just a couple of fish with an excellent weight of 72lbs 6ozs.

This was pretty much a mixed bag but the majority were carp.

Mick Reynolds was not that far behind him with a level 65lbs to leave John Sendell third with a very creditable 60lbs 11ozs.

In the latest Stoppos Open, 20lbs was needed to get into the top seven places as the fishery continues to get better by the week.

The water levels may be low due to the farmer’s needs but there were fish showing all over the pool.

That and the way it fished led everyone to say that it would not be too long before the match record was broken again.

It currently seems that most of the better fish are very close in to the margins and anglers are probably taking a note of just where the young superstar Tom Hancock has been catching his fish and are following suit.

The top three all fished close in to the reeds with luncheon meat proving to have the advantage over the other baits.

The winner was Gaz Lees with 49lbs 12ozs, a net consisting mainly of carp, all caught on the waggler on luncheon meat, while Alan Taylor maintained his high standing with another top placing, this time with 41lbs 8ozs.

Again, he stuck to his trusty pole along with luncheon meat on his hook.

Third place went to Tom Hancock with 27lbs 2ozs but this time using sweet corn on the hook.

He again alternated between the pole and the feeder at very close range.
