Festive fare proves a popular lure at Marina

BARTON Marina Fishery had a good attendance at its open day on Tuesday.

Plenty of fish were caught, the best running to 6lbs caught by Dixie Baxter.

Most of the fish were caught on the windward side of the lakes and there were plenty in the 2lbs-plus bracket.

Most were caught on lures, especially white ones fished on fast sinking lines and retrieved slowly across the bottom.

Several anglers caught on nymphs such as hares ears fished on intermediate lines.

The fishery is open all year round and is well worth a visit, even if it is only for a few hours at this time of the winter.

Off the water, Foremark Fly Fishers’ Association kick-off their much-awaited winter programme at the John Thompson at Ingeby on January 9.

The full programme is as follows: January 9: Mick O’Farrell — wet and dry fly fishing on reservoirs and big waters.

Mick is Irish and has just written his first book. An excellent evening is guaranteed.

January 16: skittles night —venue to be arranged.

January 23: Rob Edmunds — last year Rob had rave reviews after his appearance.

Talk is on reservoir fishing but beware, Rob does not hold back and will tell you everything you want to know! January 30th: Ian Colclough — current member of the England team and a member at Blithfield Reservoir as well. He is a local man and is more than keen to offer his advice on anything to do with team or individual fishing at the highest level.

February 6: Ray and Wendy Gibson — Wendy is a close member of the club and is always happy to show just what she can do with the fly-tying vice. She is the top lady fly-tier in the country and is experienced at coaching anglers who have just started tying their own flies to those who are more than accomplished.

February 13th: John Watson —John is a former local headmaster and this will be his second visit to the club. He is a river angler, specialszing on the River Dove and has just written his second book, based on Roger Woolley, a man who used to tie flies in his hands. Roger originated from Hatton so his talk will be on his life and how he became one of the most acclaimed fly tiers in the country.

February 20: skittles night — venue to be arranged.

February 27: Barry Grantham — Specialises at rod building and reel building and he will be demonstrating just how it is done.

March 5: Phil Holding — Phil is a specialist on North Country Spiders. He will be explaining exactly what they are and how they can be used on reservoirs and not just rivers.

March 12th: James Roche and Ifor Jones — James is regional development officer for the Angling Development Board and will be explaining what the organisation is doing to develop angling in the area.

Ifor Jones is well known to all of the club members as he runs Foremark Reservoir as well as Thornton and Draycote Reservoirs.

He will be explaining exactly what is planned for the reservoir.

Meetings are held at the John Thompson Inn, Ingleby and will start at 7.45pm.

There will be a break at around 9pm for food, refills and a raffle and meetings are scheduled to conclude between 10- 10.30pm.

Membership is £20 and that covers all of the speakers and entry into at least ten club competitions that are held over the season. If you don’t wish to become a member then you can attend any meeting for just £3 each.
