Reservoirs suffer as water levels hit a low

SUNDAY is going to be an interesting day as the Foremark Fly Fishers contest their final match of the season from the banks.

The cold and wet conditions at Thornton have seen few anglers fishing at the reservoirIn midweek, the reservoir was at least 20ft down on being full and this has exposed banks of mud in several areas, notably Flamingo Bay.

This decline in the water level means the reservoir is only around 60 per cent of capacity, and a similar situation exists at Carsington.

Here the fishing may have to come to a halt over the next week or so as the boats cannot access the water, and the fishery should be contacted for up-to-date information.

The fishing at Foremark has not been spectacular but anglers have been coming in with just a few fish each but they have had plenty of offers.

The main problem has been whether to fish lures or nymphs as both have been catching fish. This applies to boat as well as bank anglers.

The latter have been catching an increasing number of fish and if you intend to fish from the banks, please be aware that some areas are muddy and while not deep, could cause some problems.

The main catching areas have been Carver’s Arm, especially near to the Cascade, and in open water where minkies and fry patterns have been taking the most fish.

Anglers drifting across the Arm between Sunblest Bay and the Cascade have also done well.

Best fish was a rainbow of 5lbs 6ozs helping the fishery to a rod average of 2.7 fish per rod.

THORNTON Reservoir had a re-stocking last Friday and that brought the figure to morw than 1,000 over the last four weeks and they should hopefully, bring the rod average up to a more normal figure.

The water is currently around 9ft down on full and there are plenty of fry around but the trout have not locked onto them yet, but they certainly will when the weather cools.

LOOKING ahead a couple of weeks, have you ever fancied tying your own flies or improving what you already do? Then you are welcome to attend a series of fly-tying evenings to be held at the John Thompson Inn, Ingleby on Mondays October 31, November 7, 14 and 28 and December 5.

Most will have professional fly tier Wendy Gibson present and husband Ray will be bringing along his ‘shop’ so you will not be short of anything.

The evenings are fun and friendly and if you do not have any equipment, there will be plenty for you to use.

Each session is free to anyone who wants to attend and refreshements will be available.

BURTON Fly Fair proved to be an outstanding success for traders and customers alike last weekend.

Traders were treated in some respects to having their vehicles unloaded and loaded by members of the Foremark Fly Fishers at each end of the show.

The show was such a success that a repeat of the event has already been booked for Sunday, October 7, next year when there is every chance that it will be bigger and better.

The day raised more than £1,400 to be distributed to the Casting for Recovery and Fishing for Heroes charities.
