Archer puts on a top-flight display
SNOOKER
BELMONT A defeated a talented Swadlincote Snooker Centre A 6-2 as star man Ian Archer continued his sparkling start to the season.
Archer won both frames against Pete Maguire to maintain his 100 per cent record, while Mark Press did the double against Ben Davies.
Old campaigner Steve Burton knocked in an excellent 39 break in the first frame against Henry Tomas with some very good potting, but the roles were reversed in the second.
The best two frames of the night were between Shaun Gebbie and Adam Harrison, with the latter knocking in a 36 break as it ended honours even.
Burton Cons A’s bandwagon rolled on, though they had a struggle with Stapenhill A and depended on Mick Simpkins winning his frames against Carl Jeffcoate to secure a 5-3 victory.
Rileys B were 7-1 winners against Willington 7-1, whose consolation frame came from Bill Stewart against Andy Spiers.
Mark King made a 32 break against Brian Periera and John Chambers knocked in a 33 against brother Wayne Periera.
Mark Satchwell led by example for Woodville WMC A against Rileys A, winning both of his frames against Tim Hodkinson with the help of a 52 break and even making the tea! Martin Hicks also won both frames - the first frame under a great deal of pressure when he cleared from brown to black to steal it from Michael Dewsbury.
Hicks had no problem in the second frame, while a tight match between Fran McNulty and Martin Riddell ended honours even.
Zaheer Hussain was in solid form for Rileys to win his frames against Simon Smith, who is not enjoying the rub of the green at the moment.
Honours were shared in the match between Swadlincote Cons A and Ivanhoe A, for whom Andy made a 53 break - the highest of the week - against Paul Berry.
Swad Cons’ Vince Draper made a 30 break.
Tutbury A enjoyed a fine 5-3 win away to Ivanhoe B 5-3 thanks Daz Lester’s double against Gaz Dolman.
In the President’s Division One, Burton Cons B are certainly a stronger team this season and proved the point by beating Stapenhill B 7-1, with only Tom Egginston dropping a frame against John Richardson.
SDSC D won 5-3 against Belmont C, Ryan Gilmore making the difference by beating Paul Eaton 2-0 despite his opponent making a 29 break. Belmont’s Dave Rushton also knocked in a decent break of 34 against David Wain.
SDSC C’s Simon Orpwood won both of his frames against Dave Mabbott as Tutbury B suffered a rare 5-3 defeat on their home table.
Rolleston A were without top man Andy Winson because of swine flu and duly lost 6-2 at home to Ivanhoe C.
There were two good frames of snooker between Danny Thomson (Rolleston) and Warner Collins. In the second frame, Thomson made breaks of 27 and 23, leaving Warner 41 behind on the colours. He got the required snookers but Thomson still managed to win the frame.
Rileys C drew with Woodville SC S, as the visitors’ Mark Hadley took both frames off David Mawhinney. John Hardy for Riley’s beat Tim Knopik 2-0 and Tony Clements made a 32 break.
In another drawn game between SDSC B and Belmont B, Steve Ayre for SDSC took both frames off Paul Twigg, while Belmont’s Rich Goldby played very well to beat Chris Dewey.
In David Wain Division, Ivanhoe D are having a good season and beat Rolleston B 5-3 after Stuart Tagg and Brendon Mattley gave Ivanhoe A a 3-1 lead.
The two Jason’s - Pickering and Collins - won two frames between them to give Ivanhoe a close win.
Drakelow A lost at home to Swad Cons C 5-3 as their difficult season continued.
SDSC » did well to beat a talented Riley’s D thanks to the efforts of Andy Jefferies in taking both frames against Dean Parker.
Alrewas A were 6-2 winners against a strong Swadlincote Cons B’ 6-2.
In the Rileys Division, Swadlincote Cons D claimed a victory against a no-show Q Club A. This is not the first time they have failed to fulfill a fixture and their record will be considered by the league’s committee.
Alrewas B did well to beat an experienced Belmont D 6-2 away from home 6-2, despite young Micky Morris surprisingly dropped a frame to Brian Cutting.
Alrewas pair Darren Brown and Dave Riley won all of their frames against Doug Lees and Walter Clamp respectively.
Woodville WMC B, who have too good a team to stay long in this division, won at Tutbury C with the help of Lee Sherratt’s 37 break in beating Graham Smith 2- 0. Steve Pearsall won both frames.
