Hitman's tip for Shaw is to bury rivals

RED-HOT prospect Tom Shaw has taken Ricky Hatton’s advice and is ready to throw non-stop punches in Bury this month.

Burton boxer Shaw aims to make it three wins out of three on Saturday, July 23 on a show promoted by Hatton Promotions.

And the 20 year-old light-welterweight will be in tip-top shape for the four-round fight after gruelling training sessions with manager Errol Johnson at his Wednesbury gym.

The show in Bury will be topped by home-town hero Scott Quigg, and Shaw says he is planning to chalk up his first knock-out win as a professional.

“I spoke to Ricky Hatton after my debut and he said I have to keep working hard in the gym — and I’ve definitely being doing that,” said the former England amateur international.

“I’ve been throwing non-stop punches on the bags in the gym — and it’s been hard work.

“I’m planning to set a red-hot pace and keep it up. I want to make my opponent work so hard that he can’t stay with me and by the later rounds, I should get the knock out. I need to start knocking these guys out.”

Shaw thanked father Robert Piechowicz, his former amateur club and his supporters for their backing and they should see plenty more of him in action in the coming months.

After he boxes in Bury against an opponent yet to be named, Shaw, who has yet to lose a round in points wins over Danny Dontchev and Kristian Laight, has fights pencilled in for September and October and he says the next few fights are crucial to his fighting future.

“If everything goes according to plan, I should be unbeaten in six fights by the end of the year,” he said.

“I want to keep busy and keep learning from my mistakes as I climb the ladder.

I don’t want to get found out when I get a title fight. These fights are all about learning and putting things right.” Tickets for the show are available from 0758-1712653.
