ROYAL Oak ABC enjoyed a cluster of wins at a show promoted by the Newhall-based club at Gresley OId Hall.
The successes included debut wins for 11- year-old Jake Luff and and Connor Garner, 15, on an action-packed card.
Royal Oak chief coach George Balfour said: “It was a cracking show and to get so many local winners, especially the lads having their first outing, just made the night.” Luff set the standard for the Newhall boxers with victory against Sam Frake of Shepshed in a 46 kilos bout.
Said Balfour: “Jake was very nervous because it was his first time in the ring, but once he found his feet he did really well.
Joe Parker, boxing at 61 kilos, followed up his debut victory at an earlier show by defeat Bulwell’s Michael Njugana, while Billy Glover saw off Retford’s John Smith in a 64 kilos contest.
The only defeat was suffered by Lucas Harrison at 68 kilos at the hands of Walsall Wood’s Jai Oeffe.
Balfour said: “Lucas was hampered by a bleeding nose, but I thought it was a harsh decision by the referee when he awarded the fight to the fight to his opponent.” But there was no stopping Brad Clarke as he defeated Nuneaton’s Jon Vaughan in a 100 kilos senior bout.
Another highlight was John Balfour’s victory against Heart of England’s James Merston in a 74 kilos bout.
Balfour took the honours on a unanimous points decision, but Merston did not go home empty-handed as the pair picked up the award for the fight of the night.
Balfour said: “All in all it was a brilliant night and I’m grateful to our sponsors for helping us to put on such a good show.
“We also ran a raffle that raised £150 for Sports Relief.”
