TOM Shaw has had to change his plans after being handed the date for his next fight.

The unbeaten 20-year-old from Burton has been added to a championship bill at the Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick on Sunday, September 25, after the bill planned for Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium was postponed.

Jonjo Finnegan was set to meet Eddie McIntosh for the vacant Midlands Area and British Masters super-middleweight belts at the Pirelli.

McIntosh has pulled out, however, and promoter Errol Johnson will now stage the fight later in the year.

Shaw still gets the chance to have his fourth professional fight next month after Clifton Mitchell, the former British and European heavyweight title challenger from Derby, added him to a bill topped by Matt Hainy defending his Midlands Area middleweight title against Martin Concepcion.

“I usually spend my Sunday afternoons having a roast dinner at the Cherry Tree with the lads,” said the light-welterweight prospect. “I have to watch what I eat all week and that is the one treat I allow myself.

“Looks like I will have to give it a miss for a week! “Hopefully, all the lads will come to watch me box instead. Whitwick is only half an hour away — and it’s better than going to the pub without me!” As well as his weekly feast at the Cherry Tree, Shaw is also a regular at the town’s Fitness First gym.

“I do my strength training there,” said the former England amateur international.

“That was my manager Errol Johnson’s idea and I’m feeling the benefits already.” Shaw has made a punch-perfect start to his professional career, winning every round of his three fights to date, and is pencilled in to box again in October.

He said: “The Burton show being cancelled was a real blow. I was really looking forward to boxing at home, but I’ve got more fights to look forward to and the show should be rescheduled for later in the year.” Tickets for the show in Whitwick are available from Shaw on 07581 712653.
