BURTON boxing prospect Tom Shaw posted another shut-out points win in Bury on Saturday night — and even put tough-as-they-come Jason Carr on the floor in their light-welterweight fight.
Carr, from Sheffield, had never been stopped in 14 previous fights, but was saved by the bell after Shaw’s precise body punching put him on the floor in the dying seconds.
The 20-year-old has yet to lose a round in his three-fight career — and has finally pleased manager Errol Johnson.
Shaw, who is pencilled in to box in Birmingham in September, said: “Errol is a hard man to please. If he says I did a good job I must have boxed well and he said I did a good job. Everything went according to plan.”
Johnson had called for the former England amateur international to show a cool head and he did just that in a fight screened live on YouTube.
Shaw blasted much of the ambition out of Carr in a one-sided opening round.
Tall and lean, Carr does come to fight, but was soon backpedalling as he came under fire from Shaw’s heavy-handed attacks.
Shaw kept the pressure on and by the second round, it became clear Carr’s intention was to simply get through to the final bell.
Shaw set about walking him down, hurt him with body shots in the third and then produced a big finish, much to the delight of the fans who had made the trip from Burton.
Carr was shaken up and looked to hold after Shaw connected with a volley of blows to body and head and was punched to his knees by a rib-bending right hand in the dying seconds.
The bell went before Shaw could throw another punch and he said: “It’s a shame I left it that late to land the punch! “He was hard to hit cleanly and I don’t think he’s even been dropped before.
“I think he just wanted to survive after he felt my power in the first round. I had to work hard cutting the ring off, but I got to him in the end.”
