Burton Albion chase a new goalkeeper after Aston Villa man Benji Siegrist returns to Villa Park

Written byTOM SLOAN

GARY Rowett is hopeful of signing a new goalkeeper for Burton Albion this week after Benji Siegrist returned to Aston Villa at the end of his loan.

The 21-year-old keeper had been at the Pirelli Stadium since late November but did not appear for the Brewers due to the excellent form of No 1 Dean Lyness.

“Benji’s gone back,” said Albion boss Gary Rowett. “We’re looking for another keeper and have got a couple training with the group this week.

“What we plan to do is potentially get someone lined up for Saturday and then register them in the morning.”

The emergency loan window opens again on Saturday, so Albion will be able to sign a keeper in the morning, with a noon cut-off time ahead of the match at Morecambe.

Should no signing take place, veteran Kevin Poole will probably again have to step onto the bench – but Albion are hopeful their 50-year-old goalkeeping coach will not be needed.

Meanwhile, a deal to sign Zeli Ismail could take place this week when his one-month loan from Wolves expires after Saturday’s game.

The 20-year-old winger has made four appearances so far for the Brewers, two of them starts, and has caused a stir with his pace and directness from the right wing.

“I had a good conversation with Kevin Thelwell (Wolves academy manager) and said we’d like to keep him,” said Rowett.

“Zeli’s enjoyed it and now it’s a case of coming to an agreement which will suit all parties.

“Hopefully, we can extend it.”

Rowett says Ismail has helped answer the call for some end product from wide areas, particularly the right side with Jimmy Phillips in excellent form on the left.

“He’s been terrific and has already set three goals up for us,” said the manager. “I’ve spoken about the need for end product from a wide player.

“He’s been really bright and it’s probably the worst time of year for an exciting young winger with the conditions.

“We’ve been really, really pleased with him.”
