Gary Rowett takes positives from Burton Albion's FA Cup mauling at Bournemouth

Written byDAVID BROOME

GARY Rowett hopes his Burton Albion team can take lessons from last night despite seeing their FA Cup dream ended by Bournemouth at a drenched Dean Court.

The rain held off long enough to get the game on this time, but the Brewers were left perhaps wishing it had not, as their Championship hosts eased to a 4-1 victory that probably only just flattered them, such was their attacking prowess.

“Bournemouth a terrific side and it’s a good lesson. If we want to be a better side we’ve got to take one or two things out of that game,” said Rowett.

“We’ve had some really good results in the cups against good sides, and I was hopeful that we could have made the game a little bit more difficult for Bournemouth.

“But if a team are on it, and they’re better than you, then the reality is, they’re going to beat you.

“Eddie (Howe) has created such a good team here, and the pace and athleticism they showed was a real lesson to us.If that’s what we take out of the game alone, then it will be worthwhile for us.”

Rowett’s side held the Cherries to a one-goal lead until the 85th minute, with strikes from Brett Pitman and Tommy Elphick at the start and end of the first-half sandwiching a deflected goal by Jimmy Phillips.

But in the final five minutes, Ryan Fraser and Pitman again made the scoreline more resounding and ensured it was their side who earned that lucrative home tie with footballing giants Liverpool.

The Pirelli boss said: “To concede goals when we did was very frustrating and cost us the chance to really have a go towards the end.

“We rode our luck and scored the equaliser but then conceded a horrendous goal on the stroke of half-time and had a mountain to climb.

“We kept going and made the changes ready to go and chase the game – and for three or four minutes we had a go.

“The longer the game goes on, the more chance you’ve got, but we got caught with a sucker-punch and suddenly the game is over.”
