THE January transfer window has been a subject for much debate over the years since it was introduced, but for Burton Albion, it has largely been a helping hand.

This month, the Brewers have already loaned winger Zeli Ismail from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and utility man Adam Buxton from Wigan Athletic, with the former showing promising signs in his two appearances so far.

Both still have a long way to go to reach the heights of those who have come before them.

Last year, boss Gary Rowett saw that his team had the chance to push for promotion, and brought in Ian Sharps, Alex MacDonald, Michael Symes and Adam Drury.

Three of those players are still with the club, showing the good impression they made, with only Manchester City youngster Drury have failed to secure a permanent deal.

Sharps quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice defender, and has captained the side regularly this campaign when club skipper Lee Bell has been out of the starting line-up.

MacDonald was an exciting addition to the squad as they reached the League Two play-offs last term, and has continued to contribute this time around, while Symes has regularly scored key goals.

The most famous winter transfer in Burton’s brief Football League history is arguably Calvin Zola.

The Congolese big man was signed – intially on loan – from Crewe Alexandra in the 2011 January window, and scored more than 30 goals in two-and-a-half seasons.

Jamaican winger Cleveland Taylor joined the club in January 2010, and impressed enough to rejoin them in 2011.
