Pesch: How did we manage to lose?

PAUL Peschisolido admitted he was “bewildered” after watching Burton Albion surrender their unbeaten start to the League Two campaign.

Jinx side Cheltenham Town came from behind at the Abbey Business Stadium on Saturday with goals from Wesley Thomas and Josh Low in the last 10 minutes to sentence the Brewers to a 2-1 defeat.

The result brought back memories of last season when Albion caved in to a late goal rush as the Robins clinched victory in an 11-goal thriller.

And Peschisolido again found himself hard pressed to explain away a defeat when victory appeared to be there for the taking after a first-half strike by Shaun Harrad.

The Brewers boss said: “Distraught isn’t the word for it when you’ve played a came so comfortably and then lost it in two minutes of madness.

“It’s left me scratching my head and wondering how we lost the game.” A disappointing outcome for Albion was compounded by an injury that could result in a lengthy spell on the sidelines for summer signing Adam Bolder.

The former Derby County midfield player was taken to hospital after dislocating a shoulder in a heavy fall in added time at the end of the first half.

“Adam’s shoulder came straight out of the socket and we had a job to get it back in. That’s why he had to go to hospital,” said Peschisolido.

“It’s looks a bad one (injury), so I have no idea at this stage how longer he will be out.” Peschisolido shuffled his pack for the second half and Albion looked capable of adding to their first half lead.

He said: “Never in a game have we looked so comfortable away from home and I thought there were plenty of positives to come out of it.

“I thought we were excellent at times and I thought we outplayed them.

“We passed the ball better than we have been doing and I don’t know how many times we broke on them, maybe six times with three-on-two.

“But we didn’t capitalise because we opted for the wrong decisions in their box.” Sadly, it all went horribly wrong for the Brewers as they dropped their defensive guard to concede goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes.

Peschisolido said: “We had spoken all week about how Cheltenham do things quickly on the counter attack and we just switched off.

“The players have held their hands up in that respect.

“If you think you’re going to go 46 games without someone being unmarked in front of goal, you’re deluding yourselves.

“It’s going to happen and unfortunately we got punished for it.

“Other than that I thought the game plan worked fine, perfect. That’s why I’m bewildered at how we managed to lose the game.

“No-one did poorly and I’m not going to criticise people because I was happy with the performance.” RECALLED midfielder Jacques Maghoma revealed afterwards that he has asked to DR Congo not to consider him for future international duty to allow him to concentrate on his Albion career.

Maghoma was not available earlier this month after travelling to Cairo to make his second international appearance against Eygpt.
