PAUL Peschisolido described his team as a “tough nut to crack” as Burton Albion recorded their first win of the League Two campaign at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.
After goalless stalemates against Oxford United and Barnet, the Brewers did it the hard way by coming from behind in the final 15 minutes to beat Morecambe 3-2.
Aaron Webster gave Albion a dream start with a superb headed goal after only 43 seconds.
But two goals from Shrimps midfielder Andy Fleming put the Brewers on the back foot until Webster came to the rescue with his second goal of the game, which was followed by Greg Pearson’s winner from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.
Peschisolido said: “I’m delighted we’ve got our first win on the board, and we’ve surely got rid of the myth after our first couple of results that we’re going to be involved in drab nil-nils all season.
“I would have preferred us not to concede, but we kept it exciting and we kept it entertaining and to come back from 2-1 down in the manner we did showed great character.“
“We reacted in a very positive way, which is always good to see.
“The little bit of resilience and character that I’ve tried to bring to the club showed.
“Last season we had a tendency to lose goals late in games, but this time I would like to think we’re a tough nut to crack.
“I think that showed after we went 2-1 down because it was important that we didn’t concede another goal or it would have been game over.
“We had to scrap at times and Morecambe probably had more possession than us, but we were solid and resolute when we needed to be.
“We got off to a great start with the early goal but Morecambe got themselves back into the game and we had to work really hard to take all three points.” Peschisolido admitted his side made it harder for themselves when they failed to make the most of their flying start.
He said: “I was a bit gutted that we conceded relatively soon after Aaron’s (first) goal.
“Having the early lead should have put the emphasis on us taking the game to them, but that wasn’t meant to be.
“Morecambe got themselves back into the game and maybe edged the possession in that period, and I was a little bit concerned that they would get another one – which they did.
“But what pleased me was that we didn’t put our heads down, we didn’t crumble. The lads stood up tall and we went on to win the game.
“We had to change our formation three or four times during the game because they were dominating and rotating in the middle of the park.
“We had a hard time dealing with their movement, so I had to bring someone in to deal with that because that’s where their (first) goal came from.” With five points from their opening three games, the Brewers have moved up to eighth place in the table ahead of Saturday’s visit to Cheltenham Town.
Torquay United remain the surprise leaders after beating Bradford City 2-0 at Plainmoor to extend their 100 per cent start.
With former Albion defender Guy Branston at the heart of their defence, the Gulls have not conceded a goal in their last 10 league games and are now only 133 minutes away from creating an all-time record.
ALBION full-back Paul Boertien will be on the treatment table this week after pulling up with a calf strain during the first-half of Saturday's game.
THE Brewers host Chesterfield in the first round of the Midland Youth Cup tomorrow, kick-off 7pm.
