Aldershot Town v Burton Albion A

BURTON Albion boss Paul Peschisolido dropped skipper John McGrath for the trip to the EBB Stadium following Saturday’s 6-3 victory at Barnet.

McGrath, who was named amongst the substitutes, was replaced by Jack Dyer, who scored his first goal for the club at Underhill when making his first appearance of the season as a second-half substitute.

That was the only change to the starting XI, with top scorer Justin Richards ruled out for the third straight match with a back problem.

Veteran centre-back Darren Moore was drafted in on the bench in place of right-back Andy Corbett.

Former Brewers defender Aaron Brown was on the bench for the Shots.

SHOTS (4-4-2): Worner; Herd (capt), Jones, Morris, Straker; McGlashan, Guttridge, Vincenti, Smith; Rankine, Hylton; subs: Brown, Collins, Bubb, Pulis, Davies.

BREWERS (4-4-2): Atkins; Amankwaah, James, Austin, Webster; Taylor, Bolder (capt), Dyer; Phillips; Zola, Kee; subs: Poole (gk), Moore, Yussuf, Maghoma, McGrath.

HALF-TIME: The Brewers were forced to withstand some early pressure, with goalkeeper Ross Atkins gathering an awkward bouncing long-range effort from left winger Adam Smith on five minutes just in front of midfielder Luke Guttridge.

A minute later, Albion left-back Aaron Webster was booked for a foul on striker Michael Rankine, with left-back Anthony Straker’s low 20-yard free-kick deflected just wide of the target off the defensive wall.

On 11 minutes, Smith sent over a corner from the right but centre-back Darren Jones headed over.

With 17 minutes gone, right-back Ben Herd’s deflected path ran kindly for midfielder Peter Vincenti, who advanced down the right channel before sending over a cross to the far post.

It was difficult for striker Danny Hylton who, from a tight angle, volleyed over with the ball at a difficult height for him.

Three minutes later, Herd swung a ball over to the far post, where Vincenti volleyed it back across goal, but Atkins dived to gather in front of right winger Jermaine McGlashan.

Smith should have done better on 26 minutes when picked out inside the area to the left of goal by Hylton, but blasted a shot wide of the target with only Atkins to beat.

Albion had to wait until the 29th minute for their first real sight of goal.

Billy Kee did well on the right, holding off a defender and cutting inside before slipping a pass to fellow striker Calvin Zola.

He tried to chip the keeper, but his effort was comfortably over.

The Brewers were forced into a change on 31 minutes with right-back Kevin Amankwaah going off injured and replaced by Moore, with Ryan Austin switching to the right of the back four.

The Shots finally broke the deadlock on 38 minutes.

After Hylton had held the ball up down the left, he fed Smith, who cut in and crossed for a diving McGlashan, who had got in front of marker Jimmy Phillips, to head home.

The hosts doubled their advantage in spectacular style a minute before half-time.

Smith’s corner from the left was punched away by Atkins to the right, where Jones picked it up and sent over a cross which was headed out.

However, it went straight to Guttridge, who shaped and struck a blistering first-time volley which flew past the Albion keeper and into the far corner.

FULL TIME: Peschisolido made another change at the start of the second half, with McGrath replacing Phillips and sat in front of the back four, with Kee switching to the left wing in what was now a 4-1-4-1 formation.

The Brewers were almost caught out on 48 minutes when Smith went racing down the left, cut in and sent over a cross-shot which deceived Atkins, who got under it and was relieved to see it just go wide of the far post.

The hosts went close again on 52 minutes when Vincenti dispossessed Bolder and then won a 50-50 challenge with Moore.

He slipped the ball right to McGlashan, whose cross found a diving Hylton, but his brave header was just wide of the far post.

Peschisolido’s final change came on 58 minutes, with Maghoma on for Dyer.

However, the Shots almost made it 3-0 a minute later when Smith’s corner from the left to the far post was met by Jones, but his header was headed off the line by Taylor.

After he had been booked for a foul on Hylton, Moore almost made amends when getting on the end of a McGrath free-kick, but he headed into the side netting.

Rankine flashed a shot inches wide from 20 yards as the hosts continued to look the more threatening.
