Burnley v Burton Albion A
TEAM NEWS:
MANAGER Paul Peschisolido handed a debut to striker Calvin Zola for their first-ever FA Cup fourth round tie at Championship side Burnley’s Turf Moor ground.
Zola came in for the departed Shaun Harrad, who scored both Albion goals in their 2-1 third round victory over Middlesbrough – the last time the Brewers played.
The only other change from that tie saw Andy Corbett replace Ryan Austin at right-back.
The Clarets, playing their first home game under new boss Eddie Howe, included former Derby County goalkeeper Lee Grant and right-back Tyrone Mears in their starting line-up.
CLARETS (4-4-2): Grant; Mears, Carlisle (capt), Duff, Fox; Rodriguez, Marney, Cork, Elliott; Eagles, Thompson; subs: Jensen (gk), Iwelumo, Edgar, Alexander, Wallace, Bikey, Paterson.
BREWERS (4-2-3-1): Legzdins; Corbett, Stanton, Moore, Malone; Bolder, McGrath (capt); Penn, Webster, Maghoma; Zola; subs: Poole (gk), James, Austin, Phillips, Pearson, Boertien, Young.
HALF-TIME: The hosts were enjoying most of the early possession, with Albion’s first scare coming on six minutes.
Left-back Danny Fox swung in a free-kick from the right which Brewers keeper Adam Legzdins dropped before gathering just in front of the goalline.
Chris Eagles went close from another free-kick moments later, with his 30-yard effort fizzing just wide of the target.
Albion’s first sign of an attacking threat came on 11 minutes when Zola blocked an attempted clearance.
He advanced down the right and crossed for Aaron Webster, whose shot on the turn was blocked by a defender.
Two minutes later, Jacques Maghoma cut in from the left and fired a shot into Camp’s midriff.
Seconds later, Eagles found striker Steve Thompson in the box, but his first-time shot was wide of the far post.
The Brewers almost took the lead in controversial circumstances.
Scott Malone won a free-kick 22 yards out on 20 minutes despite there appearing to be no contact between him and Clarets centre-back Clarke Carlisle and the left-back stepped up and curled in a free-kick which skimmed off the top of the crossbar.
However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock on 29 minutes.
Eagles played a one-two with Jack Cork, whose sublime back-heel released the striker into the box and he jinked past a defender and slipped a shot past Legzdins.
FULL-TIME: The Brewers made an encouraging start to the second half and, eight minutes in, Maghoma found himself in a good position 25 yards from goal, but shot well wide when he had Zola in space to his left.
The hosts responded on 58 minutes when Fox took a corner short to Eagles, who returned it to the left-back.
He crossed to the far post, but Carlisle’s header was just too high.
Peschisolido made a double change on 64 minutes, with striker Greg Pearson and winger Lewis Young replacing skipper John McGrath and Webster, and switched to a 4-4-2 formation.
Burnley could have wrapped it up on 69 minutes when Zola failed to control a difficult ball on halfway.
It dropped to substitute Ross Wallace, who advanced and let fly from 30 yards.
The shot looked to be heading for the far corner until Legzdins flung himself to his right to turn it round the post.
It was 2-0, however on 70 minutes.
Albion lost possession in the own half and Wallace was sent scampering down the right.
His low cross to the far post was turned back across goal by fellow substitute Chris Iwelumo and Eagles had the simplest of tap-ins.
Eagles almost completed a hat-trick in spectacular style on 76 minutes.
He took a long ball down on his chest on the left touchline, cut inside Corbett and lashed a volley which crashed off the underside of the crossbar and bounced down, but not over the line.
The Brewers gave themselves a lifeline with 10 minutes to go when Malone crossed from the left and Zola stuck out a foot, his shot hitting the underside of the crossbar and clearly going over the line.
The visitors had another chance three minutes later when Adam Bolder played a ball through to Pearson, whose shot on the turn was smothered by Camp.
The hosts almost wrapped it up on 87 minutes but Fox’s 22-yard free-kick was inches wide of the far post with Legzdins rooted to the spot.
They did make it 3-1 in stoppage time when Wallace’s free-kick was spilled by Legzdins and substitute Martin Paterson slotted home the rebound.
