BURTON Phoenix Canoe Club’s Tim Lawrenson was narrowly beaten in the elite men’s class, Men’s A, over 200m by a Dutch visitor in the final regatta of the year.
But with his paddling partner, he had revenge in the K2 race with an equally narrow win.
Matthew Bowley, also in the Men’s A, was seventh in the 200m K1.
Bowley also raced in the 1,000m and 500m K1, gaining ninth, and with his crew won the 1,000m K4.
He also took part in the most interesting race of the regatta, the 5km K4.
The start resembled a Formula One race, with a number of collisions between crews – incidents were still occurring after the first lap.
Although Bowley’s boat was involved early on, they stayed clear to claim fifth place.
Jonty Frost and Michael Walters (Burton) raced in Men’s D.
Walters was ninth in the 1,000m final, first in final two of the 500m and third in final two of the 200m, while Frost was seventh and eighth in the same races.
His regatta was also the National Championships for the Veteran classes.
Paul Brookes (AVCC) collected three medals in the Over-44 class, first in the 100m K2, second in the 500m K2 and third in the 200m K2. In the individual K1 races he was ninth, fifth and fourth.
Howard Blackman, also in the Over-44, was sixth in final two of the 1,000m K1.
Bill Lawrenson (BPCC) reached the final of all three K1 events, with sixth in the 200m and 500m and ninth in the 1000m.
Sarah Walters – recently promoted to the Women’s B class – showed she was clearly of that standard in the final regatta of the season.
She beat beating a number of those already established in the class.
In both the 200m and 500m K1 events, she was fifth.
Paddling with Steph Roberts in the K2 events, the duo were narrowly beaten in the 200m race, but although they were third in the 500m event, they were not quite on the pace of their rivals.
Roberts had good races in Women’s C, winning the 200m and coming second in the 500m.
In Women’s D, Simone Orme (Anker Valley CC) was fourth in the 200m, sixth in the 500m and second in the 500m K2.
Libby Marlow and Chelsea Brookes (AVCC) raced in Girl’s C; both made final two of the 1,000m K1 event ,with Brookes second and Marlow seventh.
In final two of the 200m, Marlow got the upper hand in second place with Brookes in 3rd.
Marlow’s best result was in the 500m K1, finishing seventh in final one while Brookes was sixth in final two.
The two girls went on to win the 200m K2 and were third in the 500m K2 for B and C classes, beaten only by B class pairs.
Burton’s Becky Noon, in only her second regatta, showed a big improvement in performance, although there is still some way to go in order to start reaching finals.
Lily Draper (AVCC), had very good results in crew boats, taking third in the 500m, 1,000m K2 and 1,000m K4, and topping it with a win in the 500m K4.
The Junior Boys had some very good results, particularly Ross Orme (AVCC). He had wins in the 500m K2 and 1,000m K4 and was second in the 200m K2.
In his individual events, he reached final one of the 1,000m and 500m with sixth and fifth respectively and won final two in the 200m.
His times were good enough to earn him promotion to Boy’s B.
James Bowley (AVCC), recently promoted to Boy’s A, had a tough weekend – his best result was second in the 200m K2 with eighth in final two of the 500m K1.
Joe Marlow (AVCC) had his best weekend so far, making final three of the 1,000m and 500m K1 with ninth and seventh places. He tops these with a win in the 1,000m K4.
