Cartwright earns his reward for ace season with under-20 call-up

BURTON RFC’s Josh Cartwright has been included in the Midlands under-20 squad for their annual divisional match against London & South East.

Burton RFC v Whitchurch actionThe second row forward has been named as a replacement for the game at Cambridge University’s Grange Road ground tomorrow.

The 19-year-old has had a stunning season for Burton first XV, appearing in 27 out of their 31 games at lock, stepping ably into the boots left by the retiring Rob Scragg, a stalwart of the club.

A former John Taylor High School pupil, Cartwright was once a member of Leicester Tigers’ academy and has a bright future in the game.

Roy Bradley, from the club, said: “He was an oustanding prospect as a junior and then unfortunately suffered a bad shoulder injury.

“But he’s overcome that and has now made his mark at senior level.” Cartwright, who stands 6ft 4in and weighs 17st, is the son of Ian Cartwright, Colts coach at Peel Croft and a former first XV lock himself.

He has come up through the Peel Croft youth system, along with fellow first-teamers Dave Archer, Danny Smith and Lewis Brooks.

He is expected to be a key player as Burton look to establish themselves next season in National League Three (Midlands) after winning promotion from Midlands One for the first time.
