Blackpool take Derby striker Varney on loan

DERBY County’s Luke Varney has joined Premier League outfit Blackpool on a season-long loan, with a view to making the switch permanent come the end of the season.

Derby County Luke VarneyRams striker Varney has had limited opportunities at Pride Park since joining the club from Charlton Athletic two years ago.

Manager Nigel Clough told dcfc.co.uk: “Luke is a great lad and has been a pleasure to deal with since we arrived at the club.

“Circumstances have meant that he has never really been in our plans and we have felt for some time that it is best for both parties that he moves on.

“His attitude around the place has been top drawer and we wish him well.” In his initial loan spell from the Addicks, 27-year-old Varney made six appearances, but only made a further nine after making his move permanent, scoring a single goal in a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in December 2008.

With the deal completed yesterday afternoon, Varney could make his debut for the Seasiders against Fulham today.

The former Quorn FC striker rose to prominence at Crewe Alexandra, where his goalscoring exploits earned him a £2million move to Charlton in 2007 before joining the Rams.

Varney will team up with another former Derby player in Ian Evatt at Bloomfield Road.
