Davies on Clough's list of transfer targets

DERBY County could soon move to sign attacking midfielder Ben Davies after watching the Notts County man twice in the past week.

Rams boss Nigel Clough has admitted his interest in the 29-year-old, who is a free-kick specialist and can play centrally or on either wing.

He scored 14 league goals for County last season as they won promotion from League Two and also created 14 goals, winning the player-of-the-year award.

Clough is also interested in Dagenham and Redbridge midfielder Danny Green, 22, who was instrumental in helping the Daggers to League Two promotion last season. He is also a free-kick specialist.

The Derby manager left early in Saturday’s defeat to Coventry City to watch the two players in action at Meadow Lane He said: “They are two players on our radar we have been watching, but we have been out watching plenty of games as always and it is just which ones we can get as much as anything.” Luke Varney’s slow departure from Pride Park is also expected to be completed in the coming days, with the 27-year-old striker set to join another club on a season- long loan with a view to a permanent move.

Clough does not blame the player for his predicament but Varney, a £1 millionplus signing under Paul Jewell, is one of the highest earners at the club.

He said: “Yes he is (a high earner), but that isn’t Luke’s fault.

“He has not been one ounce of trouble since we came, he has tried his socks off, he has not had the best of times here, but yes there are other considerations.”
