PAUL Dickov was proud of his Doncaster Rovers team against Derby County, a side he believes is the best in the Championship on current form.
Dickov watched Rovers lose 3-1 at the iPro Stadium on Saturday.
A third successive defeat has left them 20th in the table but Dickov took plenty of positives from the display.
“I believe, and the form shows, that Derby are the best in the division at the minute and we really took the game to them and caused them a lot of problems, especially second half,” said Dickov who played for Derby on loan in 2009.
“You talk about defining moments in games every week and there was one when Theo Robinson was clean through just after half time.
“A lot of credit has got to go to him for being as honest as he was and staying on his feet, because he could have gone down before he got a shot away.
“We were slightly disappointed because during the game the referee played advantage a few times and brought play back, and rightly so.
“Theo was impeded twice which stopped his stride when through on goal and meant he did not get as much contact on his shot.
“The referee could have brought play back and we should have had a penalty.
“Within seconds we went 2-0 down.
“But I take lots of positives. Playing against one of the best passing teams in the division, we more than matched them and probably out-passed them at times.
“The players gave me absolutely everything they had and showed quality on the ball. They kept trying to do the right things and trying to create chances.
“On the flip side, we cannot keep playing as well as we have done and then defend as we did on the goals but we have a young back four that is learning all the time.
“If we keep getting performances like that and may be get a little bit of luck and tighten up, we will be alright this year.”
