DERBY County expect to announce the appointment of a technical director within the next two weeks.
Interviews for the post have been held and there are others planned for this week.
Chief executive Sam Rush has been impressed by the quality of candidates.
“The search is going very well,” he said.
“It is an incredibly important post for the club, and myself and Steve McClaren are taking our time to find the right candidate.
“We have been really impressed by the quality of candidates and we are coming towards the latter stages of our search. We look forward to making an appointment within the next couple of weeks.”
The role will focus on recruitment, managing the scouting system, providing information for the manager and the board, and dealing with agents and the football network.
Former head of recruitment at Cardiff City, Iain Moody, is believed to be one of the front-runners to fill the position.
“It is a very specialist role and there are only so many people who are doing it at clubs up and down the country, and in Europe,” said Rush.
“Therefore when an opportunity like this arises there are lots of candidates who would like to put themselves forward.
“I think people view Derby County very much as we do, which is a club of immense stature and huge potential. People are very interested and excited at the possibility of coming to the club.
“We have held interviews. We are going through a very thorough interview process. Steve (McClaren) and I have been at every interview, we have done it collectively and together.
“It has been very interesting and good for me to listen and learn from the candidates and from Steve as well. He is very clear about the skills he thinks will be useful for this role because he has worked in Europe where this type of role is the norm.
“We will, I think, be holding some more interviews during the course of the next few days and then we ought to be close to making an appointment.”
Derby say they have yet to decide on a title for the role.
“The title ‘technical director’ covers the remit of the role we are looking at,” Rush said.
“When we have determined the candidate I think at that point we will finally agree both a title and a full scope of responsibility.”
