LEADING scorer Chris Martin struggled with a back problem during Derby County’s draw against Birmingham City.
The striker, who has scored seven goals this season, lasted an hour before being replaced by Conor Sammon.
“It is a pity we could not keep Chris on for the 90 minutes but he was feeling his back,” said head coach Steve McClaren.
“He struggled with his back all last week. He did not train Wednesday or Thursday. So not being able to get the best from him against Birmingham was disappointing.”
Martin has started all but one of the 16 matches this season and has become an integral part of the team.
Sammon was the match-winner when he came off the substitutes’ bench in the previous game at Watford.
“We had enough chances to have won the game,” said McClaren. “From the first one in the first minute with Jamie Ward to Sammo’s header in the last minute, there were chances.”
