KALIFA Cisse’s contract at Derby County is up and the defensive midfielder will leave the club this week.

The 29-year-old Mali international joined the Rams in November on a short-term deal until mid-January.

He made one start in the 3-0 home win against Sheffield Wednesday when he came in for the suspended John Eustace.

Cisse also had two appearances as a substitute in the victory at Wigan and the draw at Huddersfield.

Eustace has been a regular starter in the holding role in midfield and James Bailey has returned to the squad after being out of favour and then injured earlier this season.

“The manager has decided Kalifa is surplus to what we need moving forward,” said first-team coach Paul Simpson.

“Kalifa is continuing to train with us this week and is looking to get himself fixed up elsewhere.

“I think he has had a couple of enquiries from clubs in this country and maybe something abroad, so it is up to him to decide what he wants to do.

“He came in and was good for us, and was good to have around.

“He started one game and then had a problem with an infection in his toe and was not involved after that.”

Bailey has been on the bench in the last two games and came on after 83 minutes of the FA Cup third-round tie against Chelsea at the iPro Stadium.

Asked if the 25-year-old has moved up the pecking order, Simpson replied: “I think Bails had done that anyway with the way he has gone about his training recently.

“He came into the squad, Chelsea was his first game, and when he came on in

what was a very short cameo role he did very well.

“James has pushed himself further up the pecking order and it may be he gets an opportunity as well.”

Bailey last started a game for Derby in March 2012. He spent last season on loan at Coventry City.
