Rams poised to seal deal with Commons

TOM SLOAN

KRIS Commons could sign a new deal to stay at Derby County within days, according to the club’s chief executive.

Derby County Kris CommonsTom Glick is hopeful that the 27-yearold will soon put pen to paper on a new three-year contract and end months of uncertainty over his future.

Commons is in the final year of a threeyear contract he signed when he arrived from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer in the summer of 2008 - and negotiations have been taking place for months.

Glick said: "We remain hopeful.

"We have had productive dialogue in the last few weeks and we’ve had additional dialogue this week.

"We are at a significant point in the discussions now.

"Everyone knows we are in January and Kris’ contract is up in the summer.

"I hope to be able to report very good news in the coming days - we need to see where we end up.

"We’re not there yet, but we think we’re very close."

Commons, blighted by injuries last season, is Derby’s top scorer with 13 goals from 26 appearances in 2010/11 and is understood to be seeking a £15,000-aweek deal from the Rams reflecting his status as the club’s best player.

Meanwhile, manager Nigel Clough has made a £250,000 bid for Notts County playmaker Ben Davies.

As reported by the Mail last week, the Rams boss is still after the set-piece specialist after first revealing his interest in the summer.

Davies, 29, is one of Notts’ best players and was a key man as they won promotion from League Two last season.

He has an impressive 24 goals in 79 appearances for the Meadow Lane outfit, whom he joined on a free transfer from Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 2009.

Clough is in need of a player who can take quality freekicks as it is an area where Derby have struggled in recent seasons, with deliveries inconsistent from the likes of Commons.

ROBBIE Savage was last night still mulling over a possible move to Canada to play for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

The Rams captain is out of contract in the summer but could move across the Atlantic in March in time for the start of the MLS season.

He said: "It’s something I am giving serious consideration to.

"One thing is for sure, I will be leaving Derby County at the end of the season, if not before, even if they offer me a new contract. My time is up here.

"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Derby and I want to walk away with my head held high.

"There have been highs and lows but I feel that it’s made me into a man.

"It’s also helped me to really understand football. It’s been a great experience.

"But now I think it’s my duty to let the younger players come through. I wouldn’t want to hinder their development."

Savage must consider whether to sacrifice an extended playing career in favour of his media work in the UK with the BBC and Daily Mirror.
