DERBY County have not ruled out signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Simon Dawkins on loan in time for tomorrow’s Championship clash against Watford.
Dawkins, a forward or attacking midfielder, has been training with the Rams this week along with defensive midfielder Kalifa Cisse, the former Reading and Bristol City player.
Head coach Steve McClaren is considering his next step with both trialists knowing that injuries have left the squad light on numbers.
Johnny Russell, Jeff Hendrick, Paul Coutts are among those sidelined, but Will Hughes is expected to play.
On Dawkins, McClaren said: “I know Simon very well. I very nearly took him to Holland with me when I was at FC Twente and he was at Queen’s Park Rangers for a couple of weeks when I was there. I know what he can do.
“He has come in and adjusted, and there might be a possibility of doing something with him. We are looking at that.”
Asked if Dawkins could be on board for the trip to Vicarage Road tomorrow, McClaren said: “Maybe, we will discuss that. We’ll wait and see, also knowing we have got a few injuries and we are little short of numbers in the squad for Saturday.”
Dawkins has made only one senior appearance for Tottenham. The 25-year-old has had loan spells at San Jose Earthquakes, Leyton Orient and Aston Villa.
Cisse is a 29-year-old Mali international who can also play centre-back. He is a free agent.
“Kalifa has good pedigree and good history with Reading and Bristol City in the Championship and the Premier League,” McClaren said. “We have watched games of him at Reading and Bristol City, so we know what he can do.”
