ALEX Townsend could be recalled to the Gresley line-up tonight after manager Martin Rowe admitted it had been a tough call to leave the goalkeeper out of Saturday’s big FA Trophy clash.
Townsend was not involved as the Moatmen lost 2-1 to high-profile Wrexham in North Wales, as Mats Morch came in on loan from Derby County to make his debut.
The Norwegian did little wrong, but Townsend could get another chance when the Moatmen come back down to earth with the Doodson Sports Cup second round tie at Grantham Town, kick-off 7.45pm.
“When you are going from this stadium to Grantham which has an athletic track around it, it’s a bit of a difference,” said Rowe. “I had to make a big decision on the goalkeeper. Eric (Steele, the Rams’ goalkeeping coach) rang me up last week and said that Mats was available on loan and we had to take it.
“I feel really sorry for Alex Townsend but it was a football decision.
“We felt with Mats in there he would be a bit more commanding at the back and you couldn’t blame Mats for the goals.”
