GARY Norton will give his Gresley FC defence a second chance to prove themselves, but has not ruled out bringing new players in if performances do not improve.
The Moatmen suffered their first reverse of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Greenwood Meadows on Tuesday night, and Norton was not pleased with the efforts of the back four.
They will be given a shot at redemption with the visit of Quorn to the Moat Ground tomorrow, kick-off 3pm, in an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie.
Norton said: “I’m going to give see how the next few games go, because I do believe in this set of lads.
“On Tuesday, the back four all looked shaky, whereas they’d been immense on Saturday.
“We can’t have the inconsistency that we had last year, and if we can’t improve on that then maybe we need to change the approach, or bring in players who can do better.” Norton was also critical of his side's style of play as they tried to come back from two goals down against Greenwood.
Royce Turville was a lone figure up front, as ball after ball flew over his head.
"We were playing it long, which isn't our style at all," he said.
“We’ve got to do it quickly, because we lost six games last season and we’ve lost one already now. We’re playing catch up.” Norton also believes that Gresley are still considered a scalp in the East Midlands Counties League, and that teams raise their game to face the Moatmen.
He said: “There’s such a lot of expectation on the lads from the rest of the league because ourperceived wealth.
“If paying the lads £15 a week plus a small win bonus is moneybags Gresley, then it’s a crazy world we’re in.
“Everywhere we go,, sides wind themselves up to try and beat us.” Gresley will be bolstered by the return of utility player Gareth Langford.
Striker Royce Turville is a doubt after coming off in the second half with a recurrence of his calf injury, while Oliver Hancock also faces a fitness test.
Rob Spencer may be unavailable due to work, but Jamie Barrett should shake off a groin injury to play.
