GRESLEY are in the hunt for two strikers in a bid to ease their attacking shortage, but it is likely neither will be signed in time for tomorrow’s FA Cup first round qualifying match at home to Eastwood Town, kick-off 3pm.
Injuries to Dean Oliver, Royce Turville and Jordan Nadat, and the decision to allow Ritchie Hanslow to leave the club have left the Moatmen short up front.
They have put seven days in for one striker, who they will be able to speak to after this weekend, while another – who was released by a Championship club last summer – was at training last night, with talks ongoing.
Manager Martin Rowe said: “Royce did his knee on Saturday and Dean’s still not very well.
“We are trying to get of players in, and had a couple of forwards pencilled in, but it’s just a case of trying to get them in for Saturday.
“We’ve got one coming to training so we’ll have a look at him.”
Gresley are still yet to win at home, and Rowe is hoping a break from the league might help them secure that elusive victory.
“I think it’s nice to have a rest from a league game,” he said
“It gives us the chance to progress in the FA Cup.
“It’s another game at home and we’re gonna try and put things right and actually win a game.
“I’m sure if the supporters get round us and we put a bit more effort into the final third when we’re attacking, we’ll be alright.
“But it’s alright me talking about it, we’ve actually got to go and do it on the pitch.”
Gresley lost 2-1 to Chasetown on Tuesday night as a late penalty decision went against them.
“The lad’s took a dive and they’ve screamed round the referee, whose listened to them and given it,” said Rowe.
“If he’d kept his eye on the ball he’d have seen the lad never really had control.
“To be fair to the lads, they’ve gone 2-1 down but still go forward and create a chance in the last minute, but we couldn’t finish it.”
Turville (knee) and Nadat (back) are both out this weekend, as is Jamie Barrett (knee), but Mitch Hanson (knee) and Oliver (illness) should recover to feature.
Gary Hateley is back from working abroad and will challenge Ross Etheridge.
