Hugill sets new personal best in 100-mile event

A TRIP to Dishforth, near Ripon, proved worthwhile for Mercia HBM Cycling Club member Jack Hugill as he clocked a personal best in the Team Swift 100-mile time trial.

Cycling David ClarkeHe improved on his Burton & District Cycling Alliance 100-mile time by 1min 19secs as he finished in 4:21:26.

The promoting club’s Joel Weinman was the winner in 3:41:24.

Jim Hopper (Derby Mercury), from Hadley End, chose a somewhat longer distance when he rode in the Liverpool & Western Counties Association 12-hour time trial on roads between Whitchurch, Market Drayton and Tern Hill.

He covered 210.18 miles on his tricycle, while the winner was Neil Skellern (Congleton CC) with 276.89 miles, beating his clubmate Alf Hilton by just 1.5 miles.

Some aggressive riding by David Clarke (Pendragon Colnago) saw him recover his form after his recent accident as he finished an excellent fifth in the Blackpool Nocturne — an evening race held under floodlights.

In the one-hour race, he and five other riders lapped the field, but he lost out on finishing third in the final sprint for the line. Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Sharp) won the race by 45 seconds from Clarke’s group.

Clarke was even better placed when he finished third in the 121-kilometre Max Gear Road Race held at Claughton, near Garstang in Lancashire.

Clarke was the instigator of the leading breakaway group on lap three.

The penultimate five-mile evening time trial attracted 19 riders on a windy evening on the Anslow circuit.

As usual, Clarke was fastest, with Noel Adams a surprise second as he beat Sean Sleigh by two seconds.

The riders and times were as follows: Clarke (Pendragon Colnago) 11:18, Adams 11:55, Sean Sleigh 11:57, Richard Knott 12:47, Ewan Davidson 12:56, Simon Parker 13:06, Phil Jones 13:07, Brendan Walsh 13:08, Christian Aucote 13:31, Craig Tucker 13:32, Alec Taylor 13:57, Nick Chapman 14:17, Mike Barker 14:50, Andy Burton 15:08, Graham Dingley 15:10, Phil Knott 15:52, Dave Peters 18:59, Peter Rose 19:03 and Lauren Sleigh 22:01.
