BURTON Powerhouse Weightlifting Club claimed four winners medals and a runners-up spot at the recent British Grip Strength Championships.
Held at the University of Lancaster in Preston, James Gardner was the squad’s stand-out competitor, being named overall best lifter after emerging victorious in the men’s 90-kilo class.
Joining him as class winners were Paula de la Mata, who claimed the ladies 50-kilo title, and veterans Jason Dorn – men’s 95-kilo masters (40+) champion – and Graham Saxton – men’s 125-kilo masters (50+) champion.
Just missing out on top billing was Luke Davis, who came second in the men’s 80-kilo class.
The lifts for this competition tested the grip strength of the weightlifters in the three disciplines – the two hands pinch grip lift; the one hand vertical bar lift on a two-inch bar and the fulton deadlift on
a two-inch bar.
Steve Gardner, who coaches the club at the Pakistani Community Centre on Uxbridge Street, said: “It was a great performance by the Powerhouse team, and well done to James.”
The club members are now in training for the Midlands All-Round Open Championships which will be held in Grimsby in March.
