BURTON RFC can go top of Midlands 1 West for the first time if they make it eight wins from eight against top-of-the-table neighbours Lichfield tomorrow.
The league leaders travel the short distance up the A38 to Peel Croft for a 3pm kick-off which could go a long way to indicating on whose shoulders promotion and champions status might fall this campaign.
Coach Tom Barlow also believes that Saturday’s will serve as a yardstick for where the Crofters are and whether a title push is possible with the current squad.
“Saturday will give us a good idea where we are as a squad of players,” he said.
“The players have worked very hard all season so will be relishing the challenge.”
Barlow also hoped Peel Croft would be packed out for the clash.
He said: “The club are looking forward to hosting Lichfield for the top-of-the-table clash, and a bumper crowd is expected.
“We the coaches are expecting a fast paced and physical game as both teams will be going hard to win.
“Lichfield are in good form at the moment so will be hard to beat.
“Hopefully a good performance will lead to a result the club want.”
The Crofters will look to build on a fantastic result away to Kenilworth last week that saw them run out 36-23 victors.
“We had a good result away at Kenilworth last week, but despite the try scoring bonus point we are still seeking a performance with consistent intensity and accuracy throughout the 80 minutes,” said club secretary Ian Cartwright.
Three weeks ago, Barlow and co were staring at a run of October fixtures which looked daunting on paper.
However, after a narrow victory over Whitchurch, they eased to wins against Hereford and then Kenilworth, which should help them ahead of their biggest test of the season tomorrow.
“The third straight win against clubs near the top of the table is very satisfying,” said Cartwright.
“This week leaders Lichfield visit us.
“Like us they are unbeaten, however they have seven from seven bonus points.
“Recent games should stand us in good stead and there is everything to play for.”
